NSF Science&Society Scholar Award

I've been awarded a Scholar award from the NSF Science, Technology &Society program to support my investigations of the 'Ecology of AIDS' research infrastructures. My primary focus is to understand how these organizations have supported data science over the long-term, while remaining flexible and adaptable to scientific, technological and institutional changes across decades.

Two new NSF awards

I've been awarded two new grants from the NSF.

The first is a second VOSS (Virtual Organizations as Sociotechnical Systems) grant to support a comparative analysis of two long-term scientific research infrastructures using the concept of the kernel. More information by clicking here.

The second award will support the activities of digitalSTS by funding two workshops that will push us towards the publication of a community driven, ground up handbook for STS scholars focused on the digital and/or using digital methods. More information by clicking here.

digitalSTS

digitalSTS is really taking off!

We had a superb CoDesign workshop at the Harvard Arboretum in June. It involved a great deal of hands-on activity with data from the Arboretum and with the space itself. An event like that is risky (how will it go?), but the outcome was quite spectacular. Watch out for a forthcoming report on our website.

Thanks to an NSF workshop award, we were able to support student travel (and food!). This same award will cover expenses at 4S in October.

The fall Workshop in San Diego will be a watershed moment. It will be hands on in that we will all be working on the digitalSTS handbook (or, field guide...).

Keep up to date on our activities by joining the mailing list (write to digitalsts@zoho.com) or by following the blog, digitalsts.wordpress.com

Norway all the way

I am currently dashing around Norway meeting all kinds of interesting folk in Information Systems and STS.

Eric Monteiro is hosting me in Trondheim and then we are headed to Oslo together.

I'm presenting my work on i) Ethnography of Scaling and ii) A Kernel Theory of Research Infrastructure.

digitalSTS goes on!

Thanks to sponsorship from the National Science Foundation we will have two digitalSTS workshops this year.

Yanni Loukassis and Laura Forlano have put together a specular Co-Design event at the Harvard Arboretum and the MetaLab. More details at digitalsts.wordpress.com

And we will be holding another workshop in advance of 4S in San Diego this year. Details are sparse at the moment, but stay tuned to hear more about this event.
